Prostheses

Prostheses, or artificial limbs, are commonly used to replace both the look and function of missing limbs. Recent advances in technology have meant that passive prostheses are becoming a thing of the past, with current devices built to be able to function like real limbs, by communicating with the brain and performing a desired movement automatically.

In order to build a perfectly functioning device, a number of competing factors must be taken into account; The device must be able to modulate the strength of a grip (think of the difference between holding a phone and holding a soft piece of fruit), to know the intention of the user instantly, to be comfortable enough and light enough to wear all day and contain enough energy to function without requiring bulky batteries.
